Abstract

Beliefs, superstitions and tales about luck are present across all human cultures, according to anthropologists. We are perennially fascinated by luck and by its association with happiness and danger, uncertainty and aspiration. Yet it remains an elusive, ungraspable idea, one that slips and slides over time: all cultures reimagine what luck is and how to tame it at different stages in their history, and the modernity of the 'long twentieth century' is no exception to the rule. Apparently overshadowed by more conceptually tight, scientific and characteristically modern notions such as chance, contingency, probability or randomness, luck nevertheless persists in all its messiness and vitality, used in our everyday language and the subject of studies by everyone from philosophers to psychologists, economists to self-help gurus. Modern Luck sets out to explore the enigma of luck's presence in modernity, examining the hybrid forms it has taken on in the modern imagination, and in particular in the field of modern stories. Indeed, it argues that modern luck is constituted through narrative, through modern luck stories. Analysing a rich and unusually eclectic range of narrative taken from literature, film, music, television and theatre - from Dostoevsky to Philip K. Dick, from Pinocchio to Cimino, from Curtiz to Kieślowski - it lays out first the usages and meanings of the language of luck, and then the key figures, patterns and motifs that govern the stories told about it, from the late nineteenth century to the present day.

Abstract

Conducting research requires resources to meet the research need. The resources in the research institutes/ centers are often inadequate, limiting the research outcome. Research grants help overcome those limitations and help the researchers carry out quality research without any restriction. Grant proposal writing is an essential skill to be mastered by every researcher. However, the majority of the medical schools, except the few research institutes, do not have a structured learning module for obtaining grants. On most occasions, the skill of writing grant proposals goes by self-learning. For students, it is burdening due to the tremendous time consumed to learn the craft of writing the grant proposal and the exhausting clinical and academic work. This book is carefully prepared to keep in mind the difficulties faced by the young researchers and the students concerning choosing a funding agency, grant makers' expectations, budgeting, surveillance and site visits, rights of the researcher and the funding agency, and ethical and legal aspects of obtaining the grant. The book also covers the alternate plan for partial funding or interruption of the financing, reporting the source of funding and acknowledgment, good clinical practice guidelines, and dealing with the rejected grant proposal. The research projects are often dropped or modified extensively due to the limited resources in the existing facility. The researchers are forced to compromise the research objective due to expensive requirements. There is a shortage of awareness regarding the availability of funding and grant for the conduct of research. Even if the researchers are aware of obtaining the financing, there is a lack of training in grant proposal writing, which is essential in getting the research funding. This book on grant proposal writing for medical and healthcare professionals covers such difficulties and deficiencies. It will provide complete companionship from knowing the funding agency to obtaining the grant. .

Abstract

More Explorations in Complex Functions is something of a sequel to GTM 287, Explorations in Complex Functions. Both texts introduce a variety of topics, from core material in the mainstream of complex analysis to tools that are widely used in other areas of mathematics and applications, but there is minimal overlap between the two books. The intended readership is the same, namely graduate students and researchers in complex analysis, independent readers, seminar attendees, or instructors for a second course in complex analysis. Instructors will appreciate the many options for constructing a second course that builds on a standard first course in complex analysis. Exercises complement the results throughout. There is more material in this present text than one could expect to cover in a year’s course in complex analysis. A mapping of dependence relations among chapters enables instructors and independent readers a choice of pathway to reading the text. Chapters 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 contain the function theory background for some stochastic equations of current interest, such as SLE. The text begins with two introductory chapters to be used as a resource. Chapters 3 and 4 are stand-alone introductions to complex dynamics and to univalent function theory, including deBrange’s theorem, respectively. Chapters 5—7 may be treated as a unit that leads from harmonic functions to covering surfaces to the uniformization theorem and Fuchsian groups. Chapter 8 is a stand-alone treatment of quasiconformal mapping that paves the way for Chapter 9, an introduction to Teichmüller theory. The final chapters, 10–14, are largely stand-alone introductions to topics of both theoretical and applied interest: the Bergman kernel, theta functions and Jacobi inversion, Padé approximants and continued fractions, the Riemann—Hilbert problem and integral equations, and Darboux’s method for computing asymptotics.

Abstract

Edited in collaboration with FoLLI, the Association of Logic, Language and Information this book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the of the 29th International Workshop on Logic, Language, Information, and Computation, WoLLIC 2023, held in Halifax, NS, Canada, during July 11–14, 2023. The 24 full papers (21 contributed, 3 invited) included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 46 submissions. The book also contains the abstracts for the 7 invited talks and 4 tutorials presented at WoLLIC 2023. The WoLLIC conference series aims at fostering interdisciplinary research in pure and applied logic.

Abstract

This book describes the essential characteristics of graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and its nanocomposite and their applications in water and wastewater treatment and other environmental issues. The book introduces each topic in detail, discusses the basic principles, and analyzes and summarizes recent developments in the field. Various topics covered in this book include role of graphene as a potential material in photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation, water splitting applications, capacitive de-ionization techniques, air purification, gas adsorption, and decontamination of pathogenic microorganisms. Given the contents, the book is useful for students, researchers, and professionals working in the area environmental science and materials, especially graphene oxide, graphene, and graphene nanocomposite.
